Week five: Sheep breeds and genetics

Learning outcomes

  • Describe the impact of breed and genetics on end product
  • Describe the role of ASBVs in sheep breeding and selection

Lesson ideas

This week is the ideal time to remind students that genetics play a key role in both wool and meat characteristics.

As a tuning in exercise ask students to watch the Improving Merino productivity using genetic selection (MLA) listed in the resource panel.

Further explore the impact on wool and carcase characteristics of breed and genetics with the full range of resources listed here.

Students also can investigate the impact of genetics within a single breed by delving into Australian Sheep Breeding Values (ASBVs) and looking at how sheep producers select and retain stock based on objective measurements.

Invite a local woolgrower to describe the importance of genetics in their flock and how they develop breeding objectives to meet a desired market for their wool and meat.
